Why is my thermostat blank?
Common causes are dead batteries, a tripped condensate float switch opening the control circuit, a blown low-voltage fuse, a failed transformer, or a broken thermostat wire.
The thermostat measures indoor temperature and tells the equipment what to do. When it misreads, loses power, or loses its low-voltage connection to the equipment, the system can appear completely dead or behave erratically — and the fault is often mistaken for a much larger equipment problem.
Thermostat-related calls are also where the diagnostic sequence matters most, because a blank thermostat is frequently not a thermostat problem at all.

On most systems the thermostat is powered by a 24-volt transformer in the air handler. That circuit passes through safety devices — most importantly the condensate float switch. When the drain clogs and the float rises, the circuit opens and the thermostat goes dark. Homeowners reasonably conclude the thermostat died.
Other causes on that same circuit include a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board, a failed transformer, or a damaged thermostat wire. Checking the drain pan and the low-voltage circuit before condemning the thermostat is standard practice.
A thermostat mounted in direct sunlight, on an exterior wall, above a lamp or television, near a kitchen, or in the path of a supply register will read a temperature that does not represent the home. The equipment then behaves correctly according to bad information: short cycles, long cycles, or uneven comfort between rooms.
Relocation is sometimes the right fix. On zoned systems or homes with large temperature differences between areas, adding remote sensing or reconsidering zone setup can matter more than the thermostat itself.
Modern thermostats generally need a common wire for continuous power. Systems wired years ago often do not have one, and thermostats that try to power themselves by pulsing the control circuit can cause intermittent operation, short cycling or nuisance faults that look like equipment problems.
Compatibility also matters with heat pumps, two-stage equipment and variable-speed air handlers. Wiring configuration and installer settings need to match the equipment, not just the wall plate.
Thermostats are not typically repaired internally; the decision is whether the existing unit is functioning correctly and appropriately configured. If it tests good, the fault is upstream and replacing it changes nothing. If it is failing, replacement with a compatible model and correct configuration is straightforward.
