The seven factors that move the price
1. Which component failed
This dominates everything else. A run capacitor is a small part with a short labor time. A compressor is the heart of the refrigerant circuit, requires recovery, replacement, evacuation and recharging, and can approach a meaningful fraction of a new system. Between those extremes sit motors, coils, control boards and valves.
2. Diagnostic complexity
A dead capacitor announces itself in minutes. An intermittent contactor that only fails when the metal is hot, or a refrigerant leak losing a small amount over months, takes far longer to isolate. Diagnostic time is real work, and it is the part that keeps the repair from being a guess.
3. Equipment access
A condenser beside a driveway is straightforward. An air handler in a Florida attic in August, a unit wedged into a hallway closet with a service panel that barely opens, or rooftop equipment all add labor to identical repairs. Access is also why some drainage and coil work costs more than the part suggests.
4. Refrigerant type and charge size
R-22 is no longer manufactured and is priced accordingly. Even where a repair is possible, the refrigerant needed to recharge an older system can exceed the labor. Current refrigerants are far cheaper, but larger systems still hold more charge, and that scales.
5. Parts availability
Universal capacitors, contactors and common motors are stocked and installed on the spot. Manufacturer-specific control boards, variable-speed modules and matched evaporator coils may need to be ordered, which affects both cost and timeline.
6. Timing and urgency
After-hours, weekend and holiday response carries a different rate than a scheduled weekday appointment. In peak Central Florida summer that difference is meaningful, which is why triage on the phone matters: some problems genuinely cannot wait, and others are cheaper to fix tomorrow morning.
7. System age and overall condition
Age does not increase the price of a given repair, but it changes the calculation around it. Spending significantly on a system that has other worn components, an obsolete refrigerant and limited remaining life is a different decision than the same repair on equipment with years left.
How to keep repair costs down
- Address symptoms early — a frozen coil ignored for a week can become a compressor failure.
- Keep filters current; restricted airflow causes several expensive downstream failures.
- Keep the condenser clear of vegetation and debris so it can reject heat.
- Flush condensate drains before the wet season rather than after an overflow.
- Schedule non-urgent work on a weekday rather than paying for after-hours response.
- Approve the diagnostic instead of asking for a part to be swapped on a guess.
