Why is my AC running constantly but never reaching the set temperature?

The system is producing some cooling but not enough to keep up with the heat entering the house. Common causes are a low refrigerant charge from a leak, a dirty condenser coil that cannot reject heat, restricted airflow from a loaded filter or a fouled evaporator coil, and a compressor that is losing capacity. In Florida, extended run times during the hottest part of the day can be normal — the flag is when the temperature never comes down at all.

The vents are blowing air, but it is not cold. What does that mean?

The blower is working, so the problem is in the cooling side. Check whether the outdoor unit is actually running. If it is silent or humming without spinning, suspect a capacitor or contactor. If it is running and the air is still warm, low refrigerant or a compressor problem becomes more likely.

There is ice on the copper line at my outdoor unit. What should I do?

Turn the cooling off but leave the fan on so the coil can thaw, and do not scrape or chip at the ice. Freezing comes from either restricted airflow or a low refrigerant charge. Running a frozen system can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, which is the expensive failure you want to avoid.

Why is water dripping near my indoor unit?

Almost always a condensate problem — a clogged drain line, a blocked or cracked drain pan, or a failed condensate pump. In Central Florida's humidity an indoor coil removes a substantial volume of water each day, so a partial blockage becomes an overflow quickly.

My system turns on and off every few minutes. Is that harmful?

Short cycling stresses the compressor and reduces dehumidification. Causes include an oversized system, a thermostat placed in a bad location, low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or an electrical control problem. It is worth diagnosing rather than living with.

What do grinding, screeching or buzzing noises indicate?

Grinding often points to failing motor bearings in a blower or condenser fan. Screeching can be a belt or a bearing. A buzz at the outdoor unit with no fan movement frequently points to a contactor or capacitor issue. Any new noise is worth reporting when you call, because it narrows the diagnosis.

Should I shut my system off while waiting for service?

Usually yes. If there is ice, if the vents are warm, if the outdoor unit is humming without starting, or if water is present, continuing to run the system can add damage. Set the thermostat to off; leave the fan running if you are thawing a frozen coil.
