Refrigerant is not a consumable. It circulates in a closed loop and, in a healthy system, the same charge stays in place for the life of the equipment. So when a system is low on refrigerant, the correct conclusion is that there is a leak — not that the system needed a refill.
That distinction shapes the whole repair. Adding refrigerant without addressing the leak restores cooling for a while, then the same call happens again next season, usually with a lower charge and more compressor wear behind it.

Evaporator coils are a common location. The thin aluminum and copper surfaces sit in a constantly wet, condensing environment, and formicary corrosion produces pinhole leaks that are invisible without testing. Line-set connections, service valve cores, brazed joints and coil return bends are the other frequent points.
Outdoor conditions matter in coastal and humid regions: salt-laden air, irrigation spray hitting the condenser coil, and mechanical damage from string trimmers or lawn equipment all contribute to failures on the outdoor side.
Locating a leak is diagnostic work, not guesswork. Depending on the situation, a technician may use an electronic leak detector, ultraviolet dye with a lamp, soap-solution testing at joints, or a nitrogen pressure test that isolates sections of the circuit. Larger leaks announce themselves quickly; slow leaks can take longer to pinpoint and sometimes require a return visit after dye has circulated.
The result is a specific finding: this joint, this coil, this valve. Only then can a real repair option be presented — repairing a joint, replacing a coil, replacing a valve core, or in some cases explaining that the leak location makes repair impractical.
A correct repair means recovering the remaining refrigerant rather than venting it, making the repair, replacing the filter drier, pulling a deep vacuum to remove moisture and non-condensables, and then weighing in the manufacturer-specified charge. Charging by pressure alone on a system that has been opened is how systems end up over- or undercharged.
Charge accuracy matters more than most homeowners expect. Both an undercharge and an overcharge reduce capacity, raise energy use and shorten compressor life.
Older systems using R-22 face a different economic picture than newer R-410A equipment, because supply for phased-out refrigerants is limited and costly. On an older system with a coil leak, the cost of coil replacement plus a full charge is often close enough to replacement cost that a straightforward comparison is worth doing before authorizing the repair.
